Well, in the spring, I had a friend teach me the basic keys/notes, and he taught me how to read tabs. Course, he plays a left-handed bass, while I'm a rightie, but I'm a fast learner Yes, this guitar is the first instrument I have heavily considered learning to play.
Very good! While this advice might be useless, as everyone has their own learning style and there are plenty of people who didn't follow this, but I suggest you get a guitar teacher. There are a mulititude of reasons for this, but the biggest one is that there are tricks for writing songs and soloing and other aspects of guitar. It is pretty difficult to discover them by yourself. For now, you are probably only learning some covers and getting used to stretching your fingers, and there's not much a guitar teacher can do except help you with that (of course, this is dependent on your guitar teacher). It can, of course, be expensive, but later, if you really want to improve your playing it can really help. I've been playing for 11 years now, and I've had the guitar teacher I've had now for coming on two years. Under him, I've improved both as a guitarist and a musician more than I have in the previous nine years combined. He does have a degree in Jazz from the Berkeley School of Music, and he's the best guitar teacher I've had (out of about four or five). Woo, that was long. Sorry about that.
Wow, that is pretty amazing. I'm not planning on expanding my music career anytime soon, I think it would just be fun to learn, but I live in a community where tons of kids play an instrument of all sorts, so I am bound to find a teacher one way or another if I just ask.
Yeah, and as I said, you are just beginning. I began with a teacher, but I don't know if I would say it is necessary. There's quite a bit you need to understand about how to play the instrument and music theory before you can progress with what I have been learning recently. And there are people who are self-taught and are excellent at playing anyways. It's important to go with what you feel is right, no one can give you an answer for sure.
